Session Title: Constructing the American Public Realm: Do You Know How Your Park Is Made?
Description: This research navigates the complex landscape of funding models for public spaces, aiming to forge pathways toward vibrant and equitable cities. Emerging from a specialized design consultancy, this study evaluates funding intricacies for communal spaces within the American context through a comprehensive literature review and comparative analysis of nine major U.S. cities and 27 subsequent case studies across signature, connective and neighborhood park typologies. The study reveals a nuanced reliance on public-private funding, a mosaic of financial support and key influencers shaping higher spending on public spaces. While qualitative in nature, these findings drive recommendations for sustainable and equitable public space funding models. The outcomes directly inform landscape architects, policymakers and park governance professionals, offering actionable strategies to shape inclusive and sustainable urban spaces. Attendees of this presentation will gain insights into funding dynamics, understand vision-driven project challenges, and formulate strategies for advocating tailored funding models in diverse urban contexts.
