Session Title: Belonging Through Art and Signage
Description: While signage seems simple enough, it is the first and primary way that your park and recreation department speaks to people entering your park and recreation spaces. That message can be off-putting and easily ignored, or it can be designed to welcome and create a sense of belonging. This session will share how thoughtful design principles, such as universal design, can transform park signage. We will also look at a case study of how a regional park agency conducted community engagement, applied universal design principles, engaged diverse artists to create signage that speaks to belonging in parks, and how academic research has documented the impact. Attendees will be asked to explore different ways that art and signage can create a park space “where you belong.”
