Session Title: Mentoring Young Latinas and Latinos Through Park and Recreation Programs
Description: Latinas/os are the biggest growing minority in the United States. How do we prepare and empower our new generations to be successful and give back to our communities without losing their heritage and cultural upbringing? How do we connect families to the park and recreation programs through mentoring their young teens? This session will highlight and provide tools on how to engage our current Latino population that participates in our programs to become volunteers, be the voice of the community they represent and connect us with other professionals that support our mission. The session will also include testimonials from current mentees that have participated in our programs about how parks and recreation has changed their lives. You will also learn tips on how to mentor for life, creating a safe environment for mentees and their families. Learn how networking and trust are commonly shared between mentors and mentees. Find out how mentoring can create new opportunities for recruitment in the park and recreation field. Mentees could be our greatest asset and can serve as our marketing advisors with a direct link to the hard to reach population.
