  • Greener Grounds: Building a Sustainable Future With Synthetic Turf Sports Complexes

Tuesday, 9/16/2025 from 1:15 PM - 2:15 PM EST (Education Block 1)

Room: W108

Topic(s):
Environmental Resilience, Planning and Design, Sports

Description:
With more than 8,000 synthetic turf fields in play across North America, as reported by the Synthetic Turf Council, the growing trend reflects a strong demand for surfaces that are safe for athletes, durable, and require minimal maintenance. This session explores how synthetic turf sports complexes can also serve as vibrant, climate-resilient spaces that support active lifestyles for all ages and abilities while delivering significant social, environmental and economic benefits to the community. Participants will dive into sustainable design practices, including the use of recycled materials, energy-efficient support facilities, synthetic turf options that enhance player safety, fostering inclusive and accessible spaces for recreation, and strategies for natural resource conservation. The session will also provide valuable insights into market analysis, demand projections and lifecycle assessments, helping attendees understand the long-term financial impacts of synthetic turf. By the end of the session, participants will be equipped and inspired to lead initiatives that not only enhance the play experience but also contribute to a healthier, more sustainable future for communities nationwide.

Learning Objectives:

1. Participants will explore the environmental benefits and challenges of synthetic turf, including water conservation, reduced chemical usage and waste management.

2. Attendees will learn about innovative design strategies and materials used in the construction and maintenance of sustainable synthetic turf sports complexes.

3. Participants will examine the long-term economic, environmental and social implications of synthetic turf, focusing on lifecycle costs, durability and community health.
