The American Red Cross Babysitter’s Training program is designed to provide youth ages 11 to 16, who are planning to babysit, with the knowledge and skills necessary to give care safely and responsibly to children and infants. The goal of the training is to help participants learn about basic childcare and basic first aid; keep themselves and others safe; help children behave; develop leadership skills and learn how to grow a babysitting business. Offering babysitting training through park and recreation departments can be highly beneficial for several reasons: • Safety and Preparedness: Proper training ensures babysitters are well-prepared to handle emergencies, understand basic first aid, and know how to keep children safe. • Skill Development: It helps young people develop important skills, including responsibility, communication and problem-solving, which are valuable in many areas of life. • Community Support: Providing this training can support families in the community by ensuring they have access to reliable and well-trained babysitters. • Employment Opportunities: It can create job opportunities for teenagers and young adults, giving them a way to earn money and gain work experience.

Learning Objectives:

1. Attendees will learn to equip staff with the knowledge to train babysitters in essential safety protocols to ensure the well-being of children in their care.

2. Attendees will learn to design and implement effective babysitting training programs that cover age-appropriate activities, behavior management strategies and effective communication skills.

3. Attendees will learn to encourage park and recreation departments to foster a sense of reliability, ethical behavior and professional conduct among young babysitters.
