With twenty-nine years in municipal recreation, Doug is currently living the dream in his dream job as the Recreation Director in his hometown of Hobbs, New Mexico. A graduate of Hobbs High School, Doug received his Bachelor of Arts in Recreation from the University of New Mexico and got his start in municipal recreation as a summer seasonal employee with the City of Hobbs maintaining baseball and softball infields. Doug went on to spend six years in a full-time capacity with the Hobbs Recreation Department as the Sports & Facilities Coordinator. Doug was also the Recreation Center Manager for the City of Hurst, Texas for fourteen years before returning home to Hobbs in 2014. Doug maintains his membership with the Texas Recreation and Parks Society (TRAPS) to this day, and is also the current President of the New Mexico Recreation and Parks Association (NMRPA). During Doug's tenure, the City of Hobbs has successfully hosted the NMRPA's State Conference in both 2019 and 2022. The City of Hobbs' list of quality of life amenities has grown substantially since 2014: $5.2 million artificial turf project at the Veterans Memorial Complex, $16 million renovation project with the award winning Rockwind Community Links Golf Course, 2 additional splash pads at Taylor and Jefferson Parks, $4.2 million renovation of City Park, and the crown jewel of the Permian Basin, the CORE (Center of Recreation Excellence), the City of Hobbs' $63 million, 158,000 square foot, multi-generational recreation center that opened in June 2018.
