Born and raised in St. Paul, I have over 40 years in youth development. I began my career with Saint Paul Parks and Recreation in 1996 as a Recreation Leader. I co-founded the first St. Paul Leadership Academy and Youth in Transition (YIT) program, a restorative justice youth group. I have been serving as a Community Youth Worker for the past nine years. I also serve as a Project Manager for the St. Paul Community Ambassador Initiative, a citywide project that serves to reduce youth crime by redirecting at-risk youth from criminal behavior, incarceration, providing responsive services and positive developmental supports. As an Ambassador, I am in close contact with the St. Paul Police Commanders and other civic leaders. I serve on the Board of Directors for Saint Paul City Academy, the first charter school in the nation. I have participated in the University of Minnesota’s Youth Work Professional Development Series, and I have been requested by the head of the Youth Studies Department at the U of M to review several books on youth work. I have been a frequent guest speaker and mentor for the University of Minnesota Youth Studies program and served as a panelist for the For Your Information Common Book Event: Pathways for Youth: Individual and Institutional Factors. I enjoy reading, collecting music, fishing, and spending time with family.
I have completed courses in Mental Health First Aid, Mental Health-Strong Resilient Youth, Supporting Children and Youth Experiencing Trauma, Mandated Reporter, Compassion Fatigue, Trauma Informed Practices, Active Shooter, and Understanding Trauma.
I received the Vern Vick Award for Youth Work in Ramsey County, I presented at the 2019 Minnesota Recreation and Parks Association Conference and have been featured in the St. Paul Pioneer Press for outstanding community leadership and activism and the StarTribune as the peacekeepers of St. Paul.
I have been fortunate to be recognized by community leaders such as Ramsey County Attorney John Choi for Community Task Force on Safe Schools, Congresswoman Betty McCollum for Neighborhood Improvement, Former Mayor Chris Coleman for Professional Community-based Civic Youth Work, Dayton’s Bluff Community Council and Boy Scout Pack 61.
