Only 37% of children ages 6-12 played team sports on a regular basis in 2021, according to the Sports & Fitness Association. As one of the largest providers of youth sports in the nation, park and recreation agencies have the unique opportunity to help reverse this trend, providing sports programming that is accessible, affordable, high-quality, and inclusive.
This session will highlight case studies from three park and recreation agencies implementing innovative strategies to increase access to youth sports. During this session, attendees will hear firsthand from park and recreation professionals in Imperial Beach, CA; Pico Rivera, CA; and Pasco, WA plus will network with other communities committed to closing the play equity gap.
Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the benefits of physical activity for youth and the widening gap in access to sports.
