Description:
In this session, we will discuss the evolution from a single day centered around volunteerism to a collective of programs geared towards improving public access and engagement in public lands for marginalized communities. Attendees will examine volunteer trends from the past three decades and learn from the partnerships that lead to NPLD’s success. We will highlight a local example, a recently announced community-driven partnership with Toyota in the West Dallas community to improve a former superfund site. Expect to walk away with a modern approach to community development centered around parks, supported by diverse partnerships, and driven by community.
Learning Objectives:
1. Examine the partnerships that led to NEEF’s 3-decade history with NPLD, federal, state, local, corporate, and nonprofit, and why good partnerships are critical to any community effort
2. Highlight the local example of Fish Trap Lake in the West Dallas community, a 3-year, $150,000 project announced in September 2023 in collaboration with long-time NPLD sponsor, Toyota
3. Give examples of how NEEF weaves mental health, climate action, and environmental justice into our conservation and environmental education opportunities with historically marginalized communities
