Description:
Join park and recreation professionals and NRPA staff for a conversation about supporting the LGBTQIA2S+ (LGBTQ+) community in the workplace and beyond. According to the Human Rights Campaign, more than 45 percent of LGBTQ+ professionals still are closeted at work, and a survey by LinkedIn found that more than 30 percent of LGBTQ+ people have faced blatant discrimination at work.
During this discussion and networking opportunity, participants will engage in an open dialogue about the best practices and strategies for providing meaningful support to LGBTQ+ employees and co-workers. This session also will provide an opportunity for park and recreation professionals who identify as LGBTQ+ to share their experiences and what performative versus authentic allyship looks like in the workplace.
This interactive session will be centered on the dialogue and experiences of participants, will provide education on contemporary language and terminology, and will be an opportunity for participants to provide input on the tools and resources needed by park and recreation professionals to meaningfully support LGBTQ+ individuals in the workplace and beyond.
Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will be able to describe common challenges for LGTBQ+ folx in the workplace.
2. Participants will be able to identify strategies for meaningfully supporting LGBTQ+ employees and co-workers.
3. Participants will be able to describe the difference between performative allyship and true solidarity.
