Description:
A growing body of evidence shows that increasing access to parks and recreation increases physical activity levels while also promoting other health and social benefits. In 2022, the Community Preventive Services Task Force (CPSTF) recommended park, trail, and greenway infrastructure interventions with additional activities, such as structured programs, to increase physical activity (the Active Parks! Recommendation). NRPA as part of CDC’s Active People, Healthy Nation℠ Initiative translated this recommendation into the Active Parks! Implementation Guide with actionable steps to support park and recreation professionals in creating equitable, healthy, and active-friendly communities.
This session will review the details of the CPSTF recommendation and the Active Parks! Implementation Guide. It will include sections on how and why emphasizing equity is important and identify strategies and actions to advance the recommendation in partnership with the public health community.
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe the connection between park, trail, and greenway access and health equity.
2. Describe the CPSTF recommendation on park, trail, and greenway infrastructure interventions when combined with additional interventions to increase physical activity and the use of parks, trails, and greenways for other health and social benefits.
3. Identify opportunities/steps for professionals to partner/lead efforts to increase physical activity and use of these parks, trails, and greenways through infrastructure improvements, programming, community engagement, public awareness, and addressing other access barriers.
