Description:
Park and recreation facilities aim to keep communities engaged and active, and our older adult and retiree demographic is a key area. Programs like pickleball use existing and underutilized courts in most communities and have the benefit of an aerobic workout without as much stress and strain on joints and muscles as some other sports.
Line dancing is a hugely popular pastime of people from a variety of cultures, and it increases posture, endurance and muscle tone. Learn about one of the Chicago Park District’s most popular and expansive programs that anyone can pick up and strut with. We also will look at other programming that is low cost but offers highly communal, social and physical benefits.
In the United States, people ages 60 and older are spending more time in front of their screens than a decade ago, and more than four in ten people in their 60s are still working, making recreation a needed activity for both physical and mental health.
Learning Objectives:
1. By attending this session, attendees will be able to focus on the results that come to benefit older adults who stay active.
2. By attending this session, attendees should be able to walk away with programming ideas that are inexpensive but impactful.
3. By attending this session, attendees should see the broader demographic of people they can serve in their community.
