Description:
Like many cities, the community forestry in Lincoln, Nebraska, faces extreme challenges. While Lincoln Parks and Recreation Department can and does address many of the concerns for the public trees, what about the private trees? What is the role of the city?
In 2022, Lincoln Parks and Recreation partnered with the Nebraska Forest Service and the City of Lincoln Urban Development Department on an At-Risk Tree Removal and Replanting Pilot Program. The program provided grant funding for low- and moderate-income homeowners to 1) remove at-risk and ash trees from their private property, and 2) replace removed trees on a one-to-one basis. The program was considered a huge success and the next evolution of the program is underway, taking into account opportunities to improve upon the pilot. Come learn from the team behind the project and discover how you could replicate it in your community. How was it funded? How were private partners engaged? How was success measured and reported?
Learning Objectives:
1. Attendees will identify how partnerships can assist in the recovery from emerald ash borer on private property.
2. Attendees will share ideas for how to replicate this program in their community.
3. Attendees will understand how Lincoln used GIS and data to identify the areas of greatest need for this program.
