Description:
In 2009, the community of Port Angeles, located on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington, voted to save its community pool. A special park district was created to manage the “old pool” separate from the City of Port Angeles or Clallam County. Staff will share the timeline of taking over management, outline the community’s dreams and why a new aquatics and community center was needed, and discuss the community support, vote, construction and opening, as well as the focus on making sure every guest and member felt welcome and able to use the facility. The session also will have a partial focus on construction using the general contractor or construction manager process for design, construction and opening, how the community supported the bond vote, and staff perspectives on topics including grants, operations, training and getting the community to advocate for this great facility.
Learning Objectives:
1. After attending this session, attendees should understand general contractor or construction manager procedure, namely the maximum allowable construction cost and what benefits it can bring to a construction project.
2. After attending this session, attendees should understand alternative options for meeting grant requirements to get what their community deserves.
3. After attending this session, attendees should know how to overcome the challenges of a construction project after focusing on solutions the Shore Aquatic and Community Center used to meet problems in design, staffing and construction.
