Description:
Historic cemetery might not scream innovative, equitable parks programming, but in historic Oakland Cemetery, Historic Oakland Foundation and City of Atlanta have developed a model of equitable, inclusive historical programming that can be replicated in any park. From walking tours to scavenger hunts, Halloween tours, and a Day of the Dead festival in partnership with the Mexican Consulate, Oakland Cemetery is elevating historically marginalized and/or neglected stories in both its preservation and interpretive programming to expand the reach and appeal of its programming and correct historical injustices.
Attendees to this speed session will not only learn about a diverse range of programming that elevates diversity, inclusion and equity, but also will consider how these types of programs are replicable and scalable for parks and communities of all sizes.
Learning Objectives:
1. Attendees will discover innovative program possibilities and how to apply them to their current context.
2. Attendees will appraise effective, authentic community engagement strategies and consider how to use diverse programming to expand stakeholder diversity.
3. Attendees will generate novel ideas for historically themed park programming centering equity, diversity and inclusion.
