Description:
If your agency is new to nature programming or if you’re a seasoned pro, there are old standards and new widgets that are must-haves for an interpreter’s toolkit. Once we define “interpreter,” prepare for a journey into the nature programming universe. Whether it’s stuff in a staff backpack used on a hike or a loaner pack for families, each pack should be brimming with “tools” for discovery and exploration. Find out what to pack in a staff backpack, how those items can be used in a wide variety of nature programs and brainstorm where in your park system nature programming can work. (Hint: it’s anywhere!) Take a peek at our Discovery packs that are loaned out to visitors, which enable them to explore at their own pace at a site they choose, increasing access to nature. If you don’t have nature programming at your site, this session will help you navigate your own part of the galaxy. Pack your bags and start exploring!
Learning Objectives:
1. Define “interpreter” from a natural/cultural resource point of view.
2. Think creatively about site-specific nature programming materials and methods.
3. Develop an interpreter’s toolkit of materials that will suit many different nature-programming opportunities at their facilities, parks, greenways and open spaces.
