Description:
For more than 50 years, the Fort Lauderdale (Florida) Aquatic Center, alongside the International Swimming Hall of Fame, was recognized as a global iconic aquatic sport venue. The City of Fort Lauderdale committed to rebuilding this facility, completed in 2022, with a focus on ensuring its continued legacy within the aquatic sports community. This panel session, presented by representatives of the City of Fort Lauderdale and the design-build teams of Counsilman-Hunsaker and Hensel Phelps, will examine the programming, design and constructability challenges and decisions the team faced in development of this new iconic venue, including construction of the first permanent 27-meter-high diving tower installation in the western hemisphere.
Learning Objectives:
1. Attendees will examine the history and legacy of the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Facility and International Swimming Hall of Fame, evaluate how this impacted the facility’s redevelopment, and explore the relationship between the city, pool designer, and contractor contributing to the successful completion of this world-class facility.
2. Attendees will understand the complexity of programmatic and design decisions required to meet the needs of a wide array of aquatics users, ranging from the residents of Fort Lauderdale to the international swimming community.
3. Attendees will investigate the challenges of constructing a world-class aquatics venue between the Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal Waterway, including the construction of the first and only 27-meter high diving platform in the western hemisphere.
