Description:
As one of the major influencers of young people, youth sport programs that don't consider or prioritize the mental well-being of their coaches - volunteers or otherwise - are at a serious disadvantage. Taking the necessary steps to develop a proactive strategy to strengthen mental, emotional, social and psychological resources is what mental wellness is all about. Often misidentified as something one "achieves," mental wellness is instead the culmination and regulation of individual actions, thoughts and functioning that contribute to the broader overall health and happiness of the individual. As we have come to learn over the recent years of evolution in coaching methodology; as the coach goes, so does their young, impressionable team. In this session, learners will be asked to identify, formulate and apply unique mental wellness strategies that can be demonstrated to program coaches and ultimately support the goal of improving holistic community well-being.
Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will learn to describe the relationship between mental wellness, mental well-being, and mental health.
2. Participants will learn to recognize the advantages of implementing mental wellness habits into the coaching culture of their community/recreation-based program.
3. Participants will learn to identify their program’s existing strategies for coach mental wellness as it relates to the five dimensions of wellness, formulate additional strategies for proactively addressing coach mental well-being through reflection and peer-to-peer discussion, and apply evidence-informed actionable steps to increase awareness and practice of mental wellness habits within their coaching community.
