Description:
Re-creating recreation in Bernalillo County (New Mexico) means making the healthy choice the easy choice for all members of our community. Programming that was once a staple of community centers and green spaces during the mid-to-late 20th century in economically challenged communities are now coming back as a conscious creation in the 21st century park and recreation eco-system. The panel will share experiences and challenges in providing innovative wellness and preventative behavioral health programming to our community centers, support of the local food system and access to it through farm training and agro-oriented open-space programming across the urban-rural gradient, innovative land management practices that increase eco-system and personal health — including the replacement of glyphosate as an herbicide and the significant community planning initiatives to develop policies and facilities that support all these efforts with input and feedback from communities within which they are nested.
Learning Objectives:
1. Understand opportunities and challenges in developing behavioral health and community wellness programming.
2. Learn the opportunities and challenges in developing ag training and local food programming.
3. Understand the opportunities and challenges in implementing a ban on use of glyphosate and other sustainable green-space management tools.
