Description:
High-quality parks and green spaces are widely appreciated as public resources that promote social, climate, health and economic benefits. What is less understood is how the community engagement processes of creating and stewarding these spaces can optimize social outcomes. This panel will introduce a new resource to the parks field, the Community Framework, which provides an evidence base for parks functioning as social infrastructure. To animate the Framework, a panel of diverse stakeholders will speak to their experience of working on a case study (SS1) from this resource in Chattanooga, Tennessee, called the Park Listeners program. This is a best-in-class tactic for working with underrepresented communities to gather meaningful, comprehensive data on municipal park initiatives. The audience will have first access to a toolkit for applying community engagement templates and toolkits, including Park Listeners, and the Community Framework resource to their local conditions.
Learning Objectives:
1. Interpret Community Framework evidence such that a community’s most salient local issues, such as low civic participation and high rates of loneliness, can be connected to parks-based solutions.
2. Equitably approach engaging community members as leaders in conducting community-based participatory research, including how to compensate for their time and expertise.
3. Design community engagement methods that cede power and resources to communities that will maximize sustained stewardship of parks and the community at large.
