Description:
In an urban mecca like Dallas, Texas, construction and development are the gateway to economic prosperity and tree preservation is often not an essential priority. Trees are so important to the park landscape. In the heart of Dallas is Moore Park, which was dedicated in 1938 as one of nine segregated parks. When so few green spaces were available to the African American community, Moore Park became a gathering place and haven for multiple neighborhoods and their marginalized communities at a time when opportunities for recreation were at a minimum. In researching the history of this park, historical data and resources unveiled a vibrant but underserved neighborhood, an urban canopy of mature trees, and a park that has served the community for generations. The Dallas Park and Recreation Department is positioning itself to capture this historical legacy and its impact for protecting natural resources in marginalized communities.
Learning Objectives:
1. Learn which tools are available to assess tree equity in marginalized communities.
2. Discover three ways to determine if a tree is significant in their communities.
3. Understand the benefits trees provide to the community.
