Description:
Atlanta’s environmental nonprofit community is in uncharted waters with a rare opportunity to make unprecedented advances for the parks and recreation system in the coming years. For the first time ever, the Mayor Andre Dickens has convened a Greenspace Advisory Council, a collective of 13 nonprofits tasked with advising the administration on the city’s most pressing green space issues (including green-space equity, growing park needs for a growing population, adequate funding for maintenance, and more). But, with each nonprofit pursuing a specific mission and with multiple environmental challenges demanding attention, how have they found the alignment necessary for advancing their green-space goals not just with the administration, but with each other? This panel, featuring Atlanta’s Commissioner of Parks and Recreation and representatives from three nonprofits serving on the Greenspace Advisory Council will discuss the partnerships and strategy behind this unique and effective advocacy model.
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify partnerships and strategy necessary to build a broad, effective and inclusive platform for policy change.
2. Learn the steps to build trust and find alignment with city agencies and administration.
3. Structure an effective advisory committee, including opportunities for engagement from organizations not part of the advisory committee.
