Description:
It is possible that your recreation facility will be utilized as an emergency shelter. Shelter operations could be necessary due to natural disasters, fires, extreme temperatures, large-scale utility outages or any number of other reasons. You may be called upon to provide temporary shelter during facility operational hours, or even manage overnight shelter operations, but first you need to determine if your facility is equipped to serve in this manner and how it will affect your existing customer base. This session will define the different types of emergency shelter needs, identify the relationships and partnerships that must be in place for successful operations of an emergency shelter, define the roles of the recreation professional, emergency management partners, first responders and volunteer organizations, and outline a plan of action.
Learning Objectives:
1. After attending this session, attendees should be able to determine the steps necessary to make their facility ready for emergency shelter operations.
2. After attending this session, attendees should be able to identify the resources and assets used to establish the positive relationships and partnerships necessary for successful shelter operations.
3. After attending this session, attendees should be able to define the roles of each individual agency contributing to emergency shelter operations.
