Description:
Washington, D.C. has a population of 700,000, and the Department of Parks and Recreation's (DPR's) 750 full-time employees serve more than 500,000 guests a year. Returning to normal operations after the COVID-19 pandemic, there was an increase in violent crime in the district. Learn how DPR addressed this increase in violent crime through the Late Night Hype program in partnership with the mayor's Gun Violence Prevention initiative. The program created a safe, structured environment for those at risk of participating in violent crime by keeping a selected community center in high-risk neighborhoods open for extended hours - up to 24 hours - every Friday night. Session participants will learn about the development, implementation and improvements to the program as well as an analysis of the impact, necessary resources and scalability of the program in a Q&A session.
Learning Objectives:
1. After attending this session, attendees should be able to evaluate if there is a need for a similar program in their agency.
2. After attending this session, attendees should be able to determine whether they can implement this program at scale or not.
3. After attending this session, attendees should be able to communicate the role parks and recreation plays in community safety.
