Description:
Currie Park has served multiple generations of residents with recreation opportunities along the Lake Worth Lagoon since the 1920s. This jewel gradually has deteriorated over time. Through the efforts of the City of West Palm Beach’s (Florida) Community Redevelopment Agency and Parks and Recreation Department, Currie Park is undergoing a metamorphosis, catalyzing transformative change in the Northwood neighborhood of West Palm Beach. The design incorporates the findings of extensive public engagement with the multi-ethnic community to provide equity, resiliency and economic opportunity. The park incorporates design strategies that provide an inclusive user experience, creating opportunities for local businesses to support the activation and management of the park and improving the park’s resiliency to climate change and sea-level rise in a vulnerable part of the city. The design, permitting and construction of the $30 million project are financially supported by multiple government sources.
Learning Objectives:
1. After attending this session, attendees should be able to apply effective public engagement techniques when responding to the needs of a diverse community and develop an activation plan that drives design.
2. After attending this session, attendees should be able to leverage project funding strategically to pursue and receive additional grant funding through partnerships.
3. After attending this session, attendees should be able to evaluate and implement different governance strategies for park operations and management.
