Description:
Anchor Curatorial Residency is an immersive, communal art project led by the Arts and Culture Unit of the Chicago Park District. It invites a constellation of local talent to consider their relationship with surrounding public spaces while building reciprocal partnerships. The site-specific residency engages artists and community members in a process that deepens connections and establishes new critical relationships. In its inaugural year, Anchor was hosted at Austin Town Hall Park, on the Westside of Chicago. Led by 2022 Curator-in-Residence Tiffany M. Johnson, Finding Ceremony, examines the tension between safety, care and (in)visibility of Black and Brown lives in public space. A central tenet of Anchor centers on an inclusive, multidisciplinary approach, “anchored” by a mobile outdoor exhibition and performance venue designed by local artists. This session will include an overview of the practices and outcomes of Anchor Residency and the ethic of generosity that guided this project.
Learning Objectives:
1. Create a holistic plan for community engagement through the arts.
2. Rethink funding models and resource re-distribution through an equity lens.
3. Implement thoughtful collaboration projects as a means of opening up parks/public space to new audiences.
