Description:
In 2021, the world emerged from two years of social distancing seeking ways to get outside and play together again. This session tells the story of a Gold Medal agency that channeled this moment into an immersive process to plan Carmel, Indiana’s Bear Creek Park as their most innovative and inclusive community park to serve their fastest-growing neighborhoods of first-generation international families. Neighborhood-based team members drove personalized and inclusive park programming and design decisions that reflect local and international culture. The result was an authentic master plan, proudly owned by neighbors and not possible without this level of cultural awareness. The team met future users in their homes, schools and the future park itself. Families got outdoors with the designers at a tactical “base camp” on the park property, and kids sang and played carefully designed games as they were immersed in an innovative, hands-on process to design their future dream park.
Learning Objectives:
1. After attending this session, attendees should be able to create an inclusive park program and design that maximizes and reflects diverse cultural input.
2. After attending this session, attendees should be able to deploy new strategies to maximize multi-generational community input by going to their constituents, including local schools.
