Description:
Discussions on race can be uncomfortable. Fear of being judged, dismissed or misunderstood — or just flat out saying the wrong thing — in many instances can lead to an unwillingness to have important conversations that could lead to better understanding and empathy throughout our workplaces and communities. During this session, we will discuss how we create spaces to have these conversations, the roles we play in creating the spaces, and the importance of defining the words we use in these conversations (i.e., “white privilege” is real, and “Black Lives Matter” is not just a hashtag). Sharing personal examples and stories from experts, we will have a judgment-free discussion and try to make some of these uncomfortable conversations a little more comfortable.
Learning Objectives:
1. After attending this session, attendees should be able to define keywords and phrases that are integral in diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) work and allyship.
2. After attending this session, attendees should be able to understand fundamental differences between being an “ally” and being a “savior.”
3. While attending this session, attendees should learn how not being part of the solution is being part of the problem.
